The Republic of Greece is located in the southernmost tip of the Balkans, Bulgaria, Macedonia and Albania to the north, the European part of Turkey to the north-east, the Ionian Sea to the southwest, the Aegean Sea to the east, and the Mediterranean Sea to the south across the African continent with a land area of 312,000 square feet Km, population about 10.7 million. Despite its small size, the coastline of Greece reaches 15,000 km and its island area occupies about 15% of the total land area of the country. It is known as the “land of thousands of islands” in Europe. Greece strangles the Black Sea via the Bosphorus and the Dardanelles Strait into the Aegean, the gateway to the Mediterranean. Therefore, the strategic position is very important. A modern navy is even more important for the protection of national security.
