The 5-year survival rate of stage I non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) in conventional radiotherapy is 15% to 20%. The authors reported on 49 cases of stage I NSCLC with hyperfractionated radiotherapy (HFRT) from the Department of Oncology at the University of Yugoslavia and the Institute of Thoracic Research at the University of Tokyo in Japan from 1988 to 1993. There were 36 males and 13 females. Age 51 to 70 years old, median 63 years old. KPS70 was divided into 3 cases, 80, 90, and 100 were 10, 22, and 14 cases, respectively. Before treatment, chest radiographs, chest and abdomen CT, brain and bone radionuclide scans were performed. Adenocarcinoma was found in 18 cases, squamous cell carcinoma in 23 cases, large cell in 7 cases, and unclassified in 1 case.
