我不想责备公众对艺术史的热情——我不想把水从自己的磨坊排出去(意为我不想泼冷水——译者)——但是我认为,有一种有害的偏见助长了对艺术史的片面理解。由于这种偏见,艺术史专业知识的目的变成了普及的艺术教育的目的。于是,了解艺术史就等同于是理解艺术。这恰恰是错误的,外行的公众对艺术采取了完全错误的态度,因为他们放弃了自己的自然的——非历史性的观点的优点,但毕竟不能获得另外的、即专家的历史性的观点。
I do not want to blame the public’s passion for art history - I do not want to drain water from my own mill - but I think there is a harmful prejudice that has fueled the one-sidedness of art history understanding. Because of this prejudice, the purpose of art history expertise has become the aim of universal art education. Thus, knowing art history is the same as understanding art. This is exactly wrong. The lay public took a completely wrong attitude towards the arts because they gave up their natural, non-historic point of view but failed to gain a second opinion from the historical point of view of experts .
