In 1897, Wilhelm Joest, an explorer born in Cologne, left about 3,500 ethnic relics he collected from all over the world to his sister Adele Rautenstrauch. Over the years, the museum decided to refurbish it to provide adequate storage and exhibition space for almost 60,000 exhibits on display in the museum, which was reinstated by well-known German design company ATELIERBR (u | ¨) CKNER.
