Objective: To explore the significance of detecting macular function in diabetic patients with diabetic retinopathy (DR) by using psychophysical methods. Methods: The macular light sensitivities of 30 eyes of 15 normal subjects and 82 eyes of 41 diabetic patients (27 eyes without retinopathy and 55 eyes of simple type) were detected and compared with those of the pattern visual evoked potentials (P -VEP) test results for comparison. Results: The photosensitivity of macular in diabetic patients was significantly lower than that in normal controls (P <0.01). In diabetic patients, the detection rate of abnormal photosensitivity in macular was 62.19% and the abnormal rate of P-VEP was 69.51%. Conclusion: The detection of macular light sensitivity has some clinical value in the detection of diabetic retinopathy and early visual impairment.
