On August 15, 1945, the Japanese Emperor announced the unconditional surrender. The Chinese people finally won the final victory in the eight years of resistance and the Second World War was over. That day, I was beating nervously on an English typewriter in Yuanling County, Xiangxi, near the occupied area of Japan in the rush to complete a report on the new situation in the enemy-occupied areas. At that time, I was twenty-three and graduated from university just now. I was working with my classmate Zhou Jin-Sun as an interviewer for the U.S. Department of Public Information in Kunming.
