Perinatal hypoxia and ischemia have been the primary cause of neonatal brain injury, often leading to death or life-long sequelae. Due to the pathological complexity of neonatal hypoxic-ischemic brain damage, there is currently no specific therapy for this condition. Therefore, looking for new neuroprotective therapies is increasingly arousing researchers’ attention. In mammals, the cannabinoid system regulates a wide range of physiological processes and also has neuroprotective effects in different types of acute brain injury. Studies in recent years have shown that the endocannabinoid system also plays a neuroprotective role in perinatal asphyxia. This article reviews the neuroprotective effects of cannabinoids as a new therapeutic strategy in perinatal hypoxic-ischemic brain damage.
