A study published in the International Journal of Cancer describes a new approach that can be used to reduce the risk of cervical cancer. Researchers will be squarron-columnar junction (SCJ) cells, which SCJ cells removed, can reduce the risk of cervical cancer. These cells are present in the cervix and are linked to the origin of cervical cancer. A team led by chief physician Christopher Crum confirmed that removing SCJ cells significantly reduces the risk of cervical intraepithelial neoplasia. 131 women with cervical intraepithelial neoplasia were treated with circumferential resection to remove SCJ cells. The study was followed up for up to four years, during which 16 patients were identified as having relapsed. Four were identified as residual disease at the first follow-up, meaning they did not remove clean SCJ cells during the initial procedure. Twelve women were observed after the first surgery, all showing extraocular cervical cancer or mature metaplasia
