余学画,自宋及清,所喜者,流连于古人所造之境也。自癸巳始,余独于石涛努力。苦瓜和尚犹画之精灵。余不得其十一也。然见其画成必自题其上,或诗或文,洋洋洒洒,道人之所不及。余由是亦起诗心。及自作画毕,亦凑数句以题之。然自知于格律颇有乖谬之处,又疏于推敲。余每以古风之体塞众。然余知其于古风亦多不相类。或以打油自嘲,其实油亦难打也。打油者流亦须合于韵律也。推及再三,以现代拟古打油名之抑或近之乎?一笑。
