In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Chinese immigrants to the United States struggled mainly for their livelihood. Some of them brought Chinese culture and literature to the United States. During the period 1910-1940 when Chinese immigrants were detained at Angel Island, California, USA, immigrant intellectuals left a poem on the walls and canvas beds of their cabins, reflecting their painful thoughts and feelings at that time. In 1980, they were recruited as “Ellen Poetry Collection ”, published in English-Chinese form. Seven years later, the Jinshan Song Collection, which reflects the social life and thoughts and feelings of early Chinese immigrants, was also published in English-Chinese form. These two poems collected the earliest Chinese Psalms released by Chinese immigrants in the United States. They were the forerunners of Chinese-American poetry.
