Anna Karenina and Middlemarch come from the 19th century Russian realist writer Leo Tolstoy and the British woman writer George Eliot. There are similarities and differences between the two novels in structure, psychological description and feminine consciousness. Both of the two novels adopt a two-line structure, the former is a hidden internal link, the latter is a dual link between inside and outside. The former describes the spiritual dialectical process of the characters while the latter exploits the psychological state of the characters through dialogue and inner monologue. Both novels embody strong female consciousness, but the latter is more advanced than the former.
