OBJECTIVE: To critically analyze the available evidence on the impact of hydration status on the athlete’s physical activity. Methods: Access to literature that meets the inclusion criteria was retrieved from multiple databases, followed by a critical review of the incorporated literature using the Downs and Black protocols. Results: Nine articles met the inclusion criteria, with an average of 79% representing a high standard of methodological quality. CONCLUSIONS: Evidence indicates that dehydration has a negative effect on bodily performance in activities lasting more than 30s: however, in less than 15 seconds of continuous exercise, there is no significant effect of dehydration on bodily performance.
