The medical consumption in France was 4.5% of household consumption in 1950, while it was 12.4% in 1983. Most of this increase was caused by hospital health care spending. The French hospital expenditure was 1600 billion francs in 1983, and it was 1/2 of its medical spending since then, compared with 36.4% in 1960. The growth rate is similar to that of all western industrialized countries. France’s health care costs in 1980 were 8.1% of total domestic revenue and were in the middle of the OECD countries. Public hospitals have 70% of beds, hospitalization fees reach 72.8%, and all private hospital hospitalization fees are 27.2%.
