It is autumn. As the sun tracks lower in the autumn sky, less sunlight reaches the trees. The evening’s cool. Many trees slow their food-making process. Green leaves produce sugar during the spring and summer daytime, but the cold autumn nights prevent this sugar from moving into the tree.
