Objective: To study the difference of telomerase activity in colorectal carcinoma and colorectal adenoma and to explore the significance of telomerase activation in the occurrence and development of colorectal carcinoma. Methods: Telomerase activity was detected in 37 cases of colorectal carcinoma, 50 cases of colorectal adenoma and 20 cases of normal colorectal tissues by telomere repeat amplification. Results: (1) The detection rate of telomerase activity was 86.5% and 20.0% in colorectal cancer tissues and colorectal adenomas, respectively, but not in normal colorectal tissues. The detection rate of telomerase activity in cancer tissues was significantly higher than that in other tissues <0.001). (2) There was no significant correlation between telomerase activity and pathological differentiation, pathological stage, tumor size and location in colorectal cancer (P> 0.05). Conclusion: Telomerase activity is highly expressed in colorectal cancer tissues. Telomerase plays an important role in the development of colorectal cancer. It is expected to be an ideal marker for the diagnosis and treatment of colorectal cancer.
