在带有增压和增压中间冷却的道路车辆用柴油机迅猛发展之后,中冷器大约于1975年开始投入使用。在内燃机的所有领域内,这种中间冷却装置都得到了广泛的应用。由于发动机的结构型式很多、使用范围很广,还要考虑到不同的运用条件,因此需要多种特殊结构的中冷器。菲尔德施塔特 L(?)hgerer & Reich 冷却器工厂的冷却器的计算,是以发动机和车辆方面的参数以及冷却系统的特性曲线为基础的,同时也考虑到边界条件。
