黄遵宪是中国近代杰出的政治活动家、维新思想家、外交家和诗人。他的一生,与日本的联系密切,是中国近代第一任驻日本使馆参赞;《马关条约》签订后,负责对日本进行苏州开埠谈判;戊戌维新期间,积极倡导以“日本为师”进行维新变法;罢官回乡后,在家乡积极倡导新学教育和留学日本活动;编纂了近代中国最全面、系统研究日本的著作——《日本杂事诗》和《日本国志》,成为近代中国了解日本的第一人。
