刘铭传(1836——1895),字省三,安徽合肥人,清末著名淮军将领,曾积极参与镇压太平军和捻军起义。1884年中法战争期间,他受命督办台湾军务,领导军民抗法;次年十月台湾建省,又成为首任台湾巡抚。对于这样一位历史人物,“文革”以前并未引起国内研究者应有的重视,五十年代见于报刊的专题论文仅有赵捷民《刘铭传在台湾的抗法问题》一篇(载《新史学通讯》1955年第1期);六十年代更趋沉寂。自七十年代末期以来,随着学术空气日益活跃,已先后有陆方、苏征、韦庆远等同志的十多篇文章问世。并且,在近年出版的一些台湾地方史著作中,如陈碧笙《台湾地方史》(中国社会科学出版社1982年8月版)、林其泉
Liu Ming Chuan (1836--1895), the word province three Anhui Hefei, the famous Qinghua generals, has actively involved in suppressing the Taiping and Nian army uprising.
