Objective To understand the knowledge of HIV / AIDS among students in lower grades and to provide a scientific basis for carrying out health education on related knowledge. Methods A total of 1,250 undergraduates were enrolled in a medical school and investigated by using the self-explanatory questionnaire. Results 99.68% of the students heard of AIDS, 94.62% of the students knew that AIDS was a contagious disease. The AIDS knowledge of lower-level medical students comes mainly from the mass media, newspapers and magazines and school education. Their awareness rates on blood-borne, sexually transmitted and mother-to-child transmission of AIDS were 98.88%, 97.60% and 81.65% respectively. However, only 34.08% of the students knew that mosquito bites were not a transmission of AIDS. As for the attitude towards AIDS patients, some students have contradictions and fears. They think that there are 331 AIDS patients should be isolated, accounting for 26.57%. Conclusions The lower grade medical students have certain AIDS knowledge, but there is still a lack of understanding of the transmission channels, indicating that it is necessary to carry out HIV / AIDS health education among medical college students.
