Paul Laue’s “Ancient and Modern Republics: Classical Republicanism and American Revolution” explores the relationship between classical republicanism and American revolution on the theme of republicanism. La Eli sought to open up a new path to the study of the American revolution and the founding of the nation, and proposed amendments to the main thrust and method of republicanism. The “ancient and modern republics” not only reflect Laue’s challenge and critique of republican lord Poceker, but also reflect the factional disputes in the field of early American history as well as the change of historical theory and research methods since the 1960s. At the same time he was influenced by the Strauss School and the liberal traditional historiography, and was involved in the academic debates between Strauss and Republican schools and between the “neo-Locke” and republican schools. However, instead of completely copying the main ideas and research methods of the two factions, he proposed new ideas based on the core views and research methods of the two factions.
