文学的继承与创新,是文学创作与研究中的一个重要命题。它牵涉到文学史写作、文学批评等诸多文学基本问题。《文心雕龙·通变》与《传统与个人才能》分别从创作论和批评论角度对这一命题进行了论述。但是在中西比较视域下,二者都存在或强调线性逻辑的历史观,或侧重文学的彻底的“非个人化”层面的片面的深刻性。在当今文学不再局限于某种封闭文化背景的条件下,在继承传统的历时性视野中思考个人的创造,在个人创造性的共时性的视野中理解传统的丰富性势必会为文学的发展、交流和研究提供新的视野与活力。
