茶道是日本特有的综合文化体系。佛教之所以能够在茶道中充分体现,首先是因为佛教在日本传统社会处于国教的地位。另外,在孕育茶道的室町时代和在茶道形成的战国时代,左右社会走向的武士阶层出于对于生命的思考(赎罪与希冀)的精神需求而以茶道为载体,同时建立起新的物质价值体系,使得茶道具价值连城,取代土地用于分封。以千利休为代表的豪商又打造了以审美为第一目的的茶道。无论是武士的茶道,还是商人的茶道都以文化意义上的临济禅为思想基础,宋朝文人所精心构建的禅宗文化在日本饮茶生活中开花结果了。
