上海剧院是国民政府“半官办”剧团,最初以培养乐剧人才为主,乐剧《西施》则为上海剧院推出的一个重头戏,在音乐、舞踊及戏剧形式上高出其时一般新歌剧一筹,初具音乐剧的雏形,在今日看来仍不失探索价值。然而左翼剧人因意识形态与题材问题而批评之,直接导致了乐剧创作的中止、改变了该院的命运。乐剧亦被排斥在新歌剧运动之外。这是国民政府所推行的戏剧运动与左翼戏剧运动的一次正面交锋的结果。此剧的题材、形式等不但充分说明了左右翼剧人戏剧观念的分歧性,且显示了他们在戏剧功用等方面的相似性。
