  Novelist Honors His Teachers
  By Chen Qiwen

Louis Cha, known as Jin Yong to millions of readers, enjoys a huge reputation as a kongfu novelist. His blockbuster novels as well as TV series adapted from his kongfu stories have fascinated readers nationwide for decades. Since the introduction of the reform and opening up policies, he has visited his hometown Jiaxing and Haining four times. During his visits to his hometown and his schools, Cha visited his teachers and bowed his respect and gratitude to them.
Born in 1924 into a family of scholars in Haining, Zhejiang, Cha went to a village school at 7 and Longshan School at 10 for the last two years of the primary education. Chen Weidong, his Chinese teacher, found Cha was a good writer. The teacher read Cha’s composition to the whole class. Later, Cha was elected by classmates to edit the class paper. Helped by Chen, Cha did a good job of publishing the paper. His work was recognized by the principal at the school meeting. Every time his teacher went home to another part of Zhejiang Province for winter and summer vacations, Cha came to see him off. Chen carried Cha’s compositions back home to read again. They were burned during the Cultural Revolution (1966-1976).
In 1936 Cha went to Jiaxing Middle School with honors. When the Japan invaded China, Cha lost contact with Chen Weidong. It was not until 1983 that he came to know his teacher’s whereabouts. An editor at Takungpao, an influential newspaper in Hong Kong, was hospitalized in Hangzhou. And Chen Weidong happened to be in the same ward with the editor. The editor carried the news to Cha. Cha immediately wrote a letter to Chen Weidong at the hospital address. But the letter did not reach Chen, for he had left the hospital before the letter arrived. It was not until December 8th 1992 that Cha and his wife visited Chen Weidong at his home in Hangzhou. Upon entering the house, Cha made a deep bow to his teacher and his wife.
In December 1992 Jin Yong visited his hometown at the invitation of Jiaxing government. Cha visited Longshan School. After a lecture, he made an inscription expressing his gratitude for teachers at his alma mater. The local government had paid him a sum of 16,000 yuan as compensation to Cha for his family’s house. And he donated it to his alma mater for setting up a library.
After the visit to Longshan School, Cha went to a hotel to meet Zhang Kebiao, a teacher in his middle school days. Walking into a conference room, Cha saw the 93-year-old teacher and made a deep bow. Tears came to Zhang’s eyes. He says, “ha has been good all his life. And he is a model student who respects teachers. I am 93 and no one but Cha has made a bow like this to me before.”During the home trip, Cha also visited Jiaxing Number One Middle School, his alma mater, where he was warmly welcomed. Cha donated 50,000 HK dollars for a scholarship in his name and 10,000 HK dollars for erecting a bronze statue of Zhang Yintong, principal of the middle school in his days.
Cha remembers his principal for a reason. During the War of Resistance against Japanese Invasion (1937-1945), the teachers and students of the school trekked to the southern Zhejiang to flee the Japanese invaders. They were bombed on their way to safety. Acting like a father, Zhang took care of his students during the difficult years. Cha wrote an essay and published in a wall paper criticizing the capitulationist attitude of the director of discipline. Cha was kicked out of the school for his bold criticism. Zhang Yintong recommended Cha to Quzhou Middle School where Cha completed the senior high school education.
When Cha recalled the episode decades later at a lecture, he could not refrain from tears.
In 1986, a book in memory of Zhang Yintong was published by the literary history unit of the Jiaxing CPPCC. A mass meeting was held in memory of the educator who devoted his life to education of the general public. Cha was unable to attend the meeting, but sent a thank-you telegraph to the meeting in memory of his teacher.
In October 2003, Cha came to attend an international forum on movies and TV series adapted from his novels in Jiaxing. He went to the middle school to visit his teachers and paid tribute to the bronze statue of his teacher. He made three bows to the statue to show his lifelong respect.
