The overall impact of modernity brought about the dissolution of the family. Breaking the shackles of the family is one of the major themes in the new literature of the May 4th Movement. Among the revolutionary historical narratives, “class” soon replaced “family” as the core category. However, some elements covered by this historical narrative began to emerge when the family story was reinterpreted. The paper specifically discusses Zhang Wei, Wang Meng, Liu Qing, Mo Yan and a number of writers masterpiece. As a historical testimony to the above, the essay further elaborates on the significance of some of the major roles in the family.
