Many common clinical critically ill patients died of Gram-negative bacterial pneumonia. The author of this article is concerned with extrapulmonary infection. The lung’s antibacterial defense mechanism depends on the intrapulmonary phagocytic system. Alveolar macrophages are the key cells against Gram-positive bacteria; against Gram-negative bacteria, they require recruitment of polymorphonuclear neutrophils (PMNs) from the bloodstream in the lungs, aiding in the defense of phagocytes.
