Objective To investigate the status of anxiety and depression in patients with chronic osteomyelitis and analyze the related factors. Methods Fifty-two patients with chronic osteomyelitis and 55 healthy subjects were surveyed and compared with HADS questionnaires, which included two sub-tables: HADS-A and HADS-A. Depression and anxiety related factors were analyzed. Results The average HADS-A in patients with chronic osteomyelitis was (7.69 ± 3.70) points, including 27 patients (51.9%) with anxiety manifestations and 11 patients (21.2%) with moderate to severe anxiety. The mean HADS-D scores 7.13 ± 4.19). There were 28 patients (53.8%) with depression, and 10 (19.2%) with moderate depression. HADS-A and HADS-D scores in patients with chronic osteomyelitis were significantly higher than those in the normal population (P <0.001). There was a significant correlation between HADS-A and the number of surgery (P = 0.037) and patient’s gender (P = 0.047), and there was a correlation between HADS-A and duration of disease (P = 0.052) 0.014). Conclusions Anxiety and depression in patients with chronic osteomyelitis are more common than those in normal people. Multiple operations, men and long duration are the main factors affecting anxiety. Multiple operations are the major risk factors for depression.
