Objective: To observe the changes of endothelin (ET) and nitric oxide (NO) in chronic glomerular disease. Methods: Radioimmunoassay and colorimetry were used to determine plasma and urine ET and NO levels. Results: Plasma and urinary ET and NO in patients with chronic glomerulonephritis (CGN) and nephrotic syndrome (NS) were significantly higher than those in healthy controls (P <0.01). The levels of plasma and urinary ET in patients with chronic renal failure were significantly higher than those in patients with normal renal function (P <0.01). The plasma and urine NO in patients with hypertension were significantly lower than those in patients with normal blood pressure (P <0.01). Conclusion: There are abnormal ET and NO in all kinds of glomerular diseases. The increase of ET and the decrease of NO are closely related with renal failure and hypertension of kidney disease.
