我国古代的爱国主义具有虚骄自大、盲目性、保守性等特点，无法回应近代以来日渐侵入的西方资本主义文明。而在中日甲午战争前，中国近代爱国主义还没有产生，因此，尽管局部战场上广大爱国将士及人民进行了不懈的抗争，但终究没有摆脱失败的历史命运。
