从电影的历时层面看,《三毛从军记》较早地将中国文艺与后现代性结合起来,做了一次深刻的诠释。正是这一点,使今天的我们不得不将这部影片作为中国电影后现代性的第一个实例加以回顾。自20世纪80年代中期到90年代初,“后现代”这个概念早已在中国的象牙塔内被知识精英们消化殆尽了;然而在其概念背后,这个词到底与中国社会的具体文化实践有着怎样的关联?却鲜有人提及。这部电影在其档期的昙花一现之后,于时间上历经了近二十年的积淀,它会对今天的文化与历史产生怎样的启发?对此,本文的论点有二。其一,从电影本体上看,该片包含众多后现代主义的艺术体现(即后现代元素,如:历史真实性的模糊与不可能、戏仿、高低艺术的融合、对元叙事的质疑等),其“综合体现”开创了中国当代电影在后现代与后现代性表现上的基调,为我们研究中国电影及其文艺的后现代问题指明了方向。其二,《三毛从军记》是一种视觉艺术于文化上的自觉体验,而不是个人意识的创新或先锋艺术的尝试,这使得该片有可能成为人们了解中国后现代文化衍进(而不止于电影本身)的一个窗口。这也是电影作为当代文化研究的意义所在。
