Zhou Bangyan is Wang Guowei the most hard-core, most hard-pressed word criticism. In all the Ci-poems from about 1905 to 1915, Wang conducted five consecutive reviews of the Zhou words; it is a process full of emotions, cognitive difficulties and complex changes. This phenomenon is not only related to the background of the historical complexities of Zhou Bangyan’s comments and his cognitive appraisal but also to the complex changes of Wang’s cultural values in the early twentieth century. This case is a rare phenomenon in the history of Ci-poetry criticism and even the history of Chinese literary criticism. It fully shows that the cognition to the word has always been far more complicated than the poetry; it can also get a glimpse of the modern criticism of classical literature opened by Wang, which is an unprecedented practice of literary criticism.
