In 1899, a large number of scriptures, miscellaneous books, painted banners and other historical materials were found in the stone chambers of the Mogao Grottoes in Dunhuang. The total number was about 20,000 volumes. In 1907, British imperialist Stein stole about seven thousand volumes to Dunhuang and kept the British Museum in London. In 1909, the French imperialist Borghe stole more than 1500 volumes and deposited it with the National Library of Paris.
