为了参加于8月19日～9月3日在日本进行的世界男篮锦标赛,美国篮协在去年推出了新一届国家队的组队方针,尤其提出了入选队员连续三年夏天必须随时听从国家队召唤,直至2008年北京奥运会结束的要求。今年3月5日,美国篮协正式公布了最新一届美国国家男子篮球队的23人大名单。5月初,又公布了国家队训练和比赛计划。训练营从7月19日开始,比世锦赛开幕日整整提前了一个月!其中在8月7日和8日,将在中国广州分别与中国队和巴西队进行一场热身赛。美国篮球梦七队,开始上路了。
