清朝乾隆三年(公元1738年),山东掖县(现莱州市)人刘凤翔带着孙子到北京谋生,几经周折,与一山西客商合伙在西单牌楼东拐角处开了一家酱肉铺,经营酱肘子、酱肉和酱肚等。因店堂狭小,无名无号,生意一直不景气。一天,刘凤翔到市场进货,见旧货摊中有一块旧匾,上书“天福号”三个颜体楷书,笔锋苍劲有力,刘凤翔认为这匾有上天赐福之意,于是买回挂于自家小店门楣之上。小店以此命名后,生意日渐兴隆,天福果然降临。
