After the war, the direct investment in international capital flows, especially in the major developed capitalist countries, developed rapidly and became a major force in promoting the internationalization of economic life. Since the mid-1980s, the international direct investment is rapidly growing with new momentum and a series of notable new trends have emerged. In recent years, the new trends in international direct investment are mainly reflected in the following aspects. First, the scale of international direct investment has expanded rapidly. According to statistics compiled by the Japan External Trade Agency for Investing in the White Paper, the world overseas direct investment balance has risen sharply in recent years, reaching 639.5 billion U.S. dollars in 1985, breaking the hovering horizon and increasing to 770 billion U.S. dollars in 1986, an increase of 20.4% over 1985. The countries with the highest overseas direct investment balances are the United States, Britain, West Germany, the Netherlands, Japan and Canada in turn. From 1985 to 1986, the fastest growing FDI inflows were West Germany, the Netherlands, Japan and the United Kingdom, up 37.5%, 34.1%, 32% and 19.3% respectively.
