【Abstract】Emily Jane Bront? was an English novelist and poet,now the best remembered for her novel Wuthering Heights,a classic of English literature.She published under the androgynous pen name Ellis Bell. Wuthering Heights is a great work.
This paper consists of three parts,part one describes Catherine’s greed and vanity. Part two states Heathcliff’s extreme love. Part three describes reason of society.

Catherine is a young girl who don't understand love,she has strong vanity,but she didn't realized. She became a dual character person unconsciously. She is deeply in love with Heathcliff,but her love is selfish and cruel. Not only did she broke Heathcliff’s heart,also hurt the other two people. This love is strong and cruel.
Heathcliff was defeated by social prejudice,loss of self-esteem and self-confidence. When a person loses self-esteem and self-confidence,even when you do not love yourself,naturally lose the ability to love others. Heathcliff from others hate to hate themselves,and ultimately difficult to save his love for Catherine,and began to display their revenge.So when Heathcliff knew that Catherine betrayed their love and promised to marry Linton,he became “the most unfortunate creature” and “lost a friend and lost the love as well as all”. And he left Wuthering Heights angrily.
Their love tragedy reflects the social background. The society is the source of the tragic love. The intervention make the humanity and the society toward negative development,and ultimately destroy everything. Catherine give up her own true love because of this values,and start of the tragedy;Heathcliff was abused and abandoned,so he began his crazy revenge. Everything is caused by social environment. Their class is different and this is the direct reason for the tragic love. In that time,people are all full of the view of class differences,Catherine and Heathcliff’s tragic fate was inevitable. They were destined to become the victims of class society.
