This article describes a transparent two-way fiber optic communication link for connecting two MIL-STD-1553B metal line data buses at Boeing’s Space Center. This link is a two-phase, three-level data bus operating at 1 MBPS. The length is 2000 feet. The MIL-STD-1553B bus interface plug-in shares the TTL (Transistor Transistor Logic) signal with the fiber optic module. The LEDS in the transmitter is biased towards its midpoint to allow the use of an AC-coupled network. The gain and voltage characteristics of an APD (avalanche photodiode) are used to gain AGC in an ICD receiver. This article also describes the link continuity indicator.
