The food situation in today’s world is full of contradictions and ironies. Children in Africa are starving, while the U.S. government and the European Economic Community, despite paying tens of billions of dollars in agricultural subsidies, are still unable to expel vast numbers of households that are on the verge of bankruptcy because of mounting debts. As much as 200 million metric tons of surplus grain are in the world, and many developing countries are unable to provide or import enough food due to the dramatic population growth and declining domestic production.
