“史”尊“说”卑作为集体无意识,规引着中国古人的小说创作与批评活动,并由此形成小说创作中的“史补”目的。“史”采“小说”的激励、以“事”寓“义”的启发,使得小说“史补”长期被局限于“纪事实、探物理、辨疑惑、示劝诫、采风俗”等“史”的框架之下,这固然提高了小说的品位和地位,却也同时影响其虚构、娱乐等审美特征的开发。宋元以后,以“义”传播为大旗,以“史”之局限与不足为突破口,是小说“史补”发展的新方向。这一方向,为小说本身审美娱乐特征的开发提供了可能,拓展了空间,也使得小说本身的艺术个性愈来愈明显。小说灵活通变的性格特征与迂回曲折的发展路径,也在此转型中得到了突出体现。
