“福”来源于先民祭祀鬼神而赐予的福祐,同时由于对参与祭祀者德行的要求而使得福成为善德的结果,在泛化为大众的福运之后仍然保留了其积极的伦理意涵而与德统一起来;“利”来源于农耕收获而得之利,为自身生存和获利而进行的农耕行为并不具有道德上善的价值,泛化为利益之后在道德上处于中性因而可能与作为道德的义产生冲突与矛盾。对德、福、义、利诸范畴从本源上的考辨,为考察中国传统舍利取义而德福两彰的传统观念提供了新的进路。
