How a heavily indebted plantation republic grew to be the most powerful economic force in world history. When European immigrants arrived in the present-day United States 400 years ago, there were only a few million Neolithic hunters on the land. Now the United States has developed into an unprecedented formidable economy that supplies nearly a third of the world’s merchandise and service. The United States is not the leader in only a few sectors from all sectors of agricultural exports, aerospace manufacturing, and entertainment. During these four hundred years of U.S. economic history, many turning points changed the direction of the U.S. economy. There are good things and bad things in these turning points, and some are both good and bad.
