Objective To investigate the relationship between the type of ulcer and the severity of atrophic gastritis. Methods According to endoscopy results, 286 patients with duodenal ulcer and 256 patients with gastric ulcer were enrolled in this study. Helicobacter pylori infection was confirmed in all cases, and the presence and severity of atrophic gastritis were determined by histopathological examination of gastric mucosa. Results The severity of atrophic gastritis in patients with duodenal ulcer was non-atrophic (48.95%), slight atrophy (20.98%), moderate atrophy (10.49%) and severe atrophy (19.58%). The severity of atrophic gastritis in patients with gastric ulcer was non-atrophic 21.88%; mild atrophy 17.58%; moderate atrophy 27.34%; severe wilt 33.20%. Conclusions Patients with gastric ulcer have more obvious gastric atrophy than those with duodenal ulcer (P <0.01).
