风信子被认为是源于妒忌的烂漫之花。古希腊神话中有这么一个传说:宙斯的外孙海辛瑟斯(Hyacinthus)是希腊的植物神,为一俊美少年。太阳神阿波罗和西风神泽费罗斯都与他非常要好,然而海辛瑟斯只与阿波罗亲近,他们一起去打渔,打猎,进行各种体育活动,西风神甚为妒忌。有一回阿波罗与海辛瑟斯一起掷铁饼,阿波罗先掷,海辛瑟斯在一边等着。西风神乘杌改变了铁饼的轨迹,将它吹向海辛瑟斯,结果打破了海辛瑟斯的前额。阿波罗想尽一切办法挽救海辛瑟斯的生命,可是无济于事。在鲜血染红的土地上长出了一株风信子,太阳神就将其命名为Hyacinthus,以纪念好友。
