读鲁迅致曹聚仁信,总记得那一句:“《集外集》付装订时,可否给我留十本不切边的。我是十年前的毛边党,至今脾气还没有改。”(1935年4月10日信)我们当然不敢与鲁迅先生比,但爱书人总忘不掉这句话。其实,毛边书在上个世纪40年代就很少了,五六十年代逛旧书店,总爱找那些毛边书,特别是鲁迅、周作人的作品。到今天,那只是一段美丽的梦,在旧书店已经很难见到过去的毛边书了。记得1957年《诗刊》创刊时,主编臧克家先生曾想恢复毛边装帧,创刊号还有道林纸毛边本。可惜好景不长,很快就中止了。据说是读者不接受,以为那些毛边书是没有裁切过的半成品。解放后的17年,是讲究划一的时代,如今要找那个年月的毛边书,恐怕是相当困难的吧!
