每天清晨5、6点钟,晨曦微露,位于北京北三环的北京电影制片厂门口就会聚集起不少人。他们来这里是为了等待出演影视剧中群众演员的机会。这群人的构成可谓多种多样:男女老少,农村的、城市的,北京的、外地的,有受好奇心驱使而来的,有因明星梦而来的,也有纯粹为求职和生存而来的。这样的情形不仅发生在北影厂门口,同时也发生在北京其他地方乃至全国各地大大小小的影视城周围。中国影视业的繁荣与发展催生了群众演员这一数量庞大的特殊群体。
