语文学科作为塑造“求真”、“向善”、“崇美”的创造性的人才和“健全的人格”的主要阵地,长期以来,一直存在着对语文学科理解的偏差,即“语文即语言文学”的褊狭观念,也没有对语文学科进行科学、全面的界定,致使语文教育长期处于“少”、“慢”、“差”、“费”的窘况,从而严重影响了语文教育质量的有效提高。这主要是由历史的和现实的两个方面的原因造成的。
