“人过留名,雁过留声”、“家丑不可外扬”、“打狗也得看主人面”……中国人的日常生活中,诸如此类的俗语,比比皆是,这些俗语不约而同地传达了这样一个观点:人要保全面子。面子,对中国人而言,不是人体器官的物质之脸,而是一个人的精神之脸,它是一个很复杂、又不可或缺的存在。既然面子的地位如此重要,爱面子,也就难怪成为理所当然的一种共通的存在了。但凡国民性的形成,非一朝一夕,也非单方面因素,对其的理解也就不能一刀切,“爱面子”这一国民性也不例外,我们要从整体上认识它。

Chinese daily life, such as the saying goes, These proverbs spontaneously convey the view that people want to preserve their face. Face, for the Chinese people, not the physical face of human organs, but the spirit of a person’s face, it is a very complex and indispensable existence. Since face status is so important and face-saving, it is no wonder that it has become a matter of course a common existence. Whenever national character is formed overnight, nor is it a one-sided factor, its understanding can not be applied across the board. The national character of “loving one’s face” is no exception, and we should recognize it as a whole.
