A large number of different cytochrome P450 proteins are synthesized in human liver and other tissues. These enzymes oxidize drugs and carcinogens as well as endogenous chemicals such as steroids and arachidonic acid. As explained by Petor Guengerich, due to genetic and environmental effects, the activity of cytochrome P450 enzymes varies in different individuals, and in some cases the mechanism has been elucidated. This variation has a greater impact in determining drug toxicity, congenital steroid metabolic deficiencies, and possibly cancer risk. Cytochrome P450 enzymes catalyze the oxidation of drugs, carcinogens and other commensals as well as endogenous substances in the body. For research on experimental animals and humans, more than twenty different
