NEC developed a range-finding system for the scientific satellite at the University of Tokyo and is developing a distance and distance-rate-of-change tracking system for the Japan National Space Agency. This article describes some of the design issues and test results of the major extensions of these systems. Experiments show that the accuracy is very high, ranging accuracy is 1.5 meters, and the rate of change of distance is 0.01 meters / second. The paper also analyzes various sources of measurement error of distance and distance rate of change and discusses in particular the error of rate of change of distance due to the short-term instability of the voltage-controlled oscillator.
