Arebellious[反叛的] orphan living at Jordan College in Oxford, Lyra Belacqua belongs to a world that is one of many parallel[平行的] worlds. In Lyra’s world, a person’s soul lives on the outside of their body, in the form of a daemon[介乎神与人的精灵] - a talking animal spirit that accompanies[陪伴] them through life.
But Lyra’s world is changing. Many children are kidnapped by a mysterious force called the Gobblers. It is said that the children are being taken to the North for horrible experiments. When Lyra’s best friend Roger disappears, she swears she will travel to the end of the world to rescue him.
Lyra’s uncle Lord Asriel is setting out for the North at the same time, seeking to control the power of a mysterious phenomenon called Dust. Desperate to go with her uncle but denied[拒绝], Lyra is given a second chance. Mrs. Coulter, a scientist and world traveler, takes Lyra away from her life in Jordan. Before leaving, Lyra is given the alethiometer注- one that is said to tell the user only the truth, if she can only figure out how to use it.
In Lyra’s world, there is a myth of a child who will play an important part in the coming war. Could Lyra be that child?
Together with a tribe[部族] of Gyptians, a mysterious witch, a great armored[披甲] bear and a Texas airman, Lyra embarks on[从事，着手] an adventure that will take her over sky and ocean, to the wilds of the icy North, and into the mysteries at the very core[核心] of the human soul.
A great war is coming - one that threatens not only her world but all the parallel worlds - and Lyra will need all her skill, and all her courage, to stop it.

The film tells the story of 12 year-old girl, whose curiosity and willful[任性的] nature open the door to mysteries. “The Golden Compass is about free will and free choice, and Lyra is the ultimate[最终的] example of that,” says executive producer Mark Ordesky.
To find the right person, casting directors cast a wide net across the UK, seeing over 10,000 young actresses. Finally, one young actress stood out - Dakota Blue Richards.
Richards had read the books, and she particularly admired Lyra’s bravery[勇敢] and determination. “Because Lyra never had parents, she thinks no one can tell her what to do, so she never really does what she’s told,” explains Richards. “She does things other people would be scared of, like climbing the roofs of Jordan College. She likes to give the impression that she is better than everybody else because she’s braver and more intelligent, and if she doesn’t actually have a story to tell she’ll make something up.”
● Mrs. Coulter ●
Lyra’s life changes when she meets Mrs. Coulter. A scholar and an explorer, Mrs. Coulter embodies[体现] everything Lyra hopes she’ll someday be. “I don’t think there are many people in the world who could convincingly[信服地] play this character, except for Nicole Kidman,” says director Chris Weitz.
The Academy Award-winning actress embraced[欣然接受] the intricacies[复杂] of Mrs. Coulter, who has kept her true relationship with Lyra hidden from the child. “Rarely do you judge the character you’replaying. You have to work from within, and try to find the motivations[动机] as to why she feels that what she’s doing is right.” Kidman says.

Seeking to create a rift[裂缝] in the structures of his time and place is Lord Asriel, Lyra’s powerful and mysterious uncle, played by Daniel Craig.
“He’s an explorer and scientist,” explains Craig. “He has a mission. It’s the most important thing, he thinks, in his life, and probably the most important thing in the history of the world that he lives in. He has discovered this connection between the worlds, and believes that there are millions and millions of worlds running in tandem[一前一后地], and that you can access[进入] these worlds if you know the way. And he is determined to find out what it is.”
